Case Study: Grand Rapids Public Museum School
Grand Rapids Public Museum School (GRPMS)
launched in 2018, partnering with the
Grand Rapids Public Museum,
Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University,
and the
Grand Valley State University College of Education.
Located within the Museum, learning is organized with community-based, authentic projects.
As a brand-new competency-based high school, GRPMS faced the challenge of defining its framework, designing curriculum from the ground up, and preparing teachers and leaders to thrive in a completely new learning model.
What reDesign built alongside GRPMS
reDesign partnered with Grand Rapids Public Museum School (GRPMS) to:
Design a competency framework
Developed a comprehensive competency framework to guide student learning and assessment.
Develop interdisciplinary units
Developed interdisciplinary curriculum units rooted in museum resources, using project-based learning.
Establish collaboration structures
Created protocols and structures to support collaborative planning and instructional innovation.
Support leaders for alignment
Coached school leaders on aligning vision, policies, and supports for sustainable implementation.
Facilitate professional learning for competency implementation
Led PLCs that built teacher confidence and collective capacity.
Leadership alignment from launch to implementation
Launching GRPMS required schoolwide coherence and strong leadership. reDesign provided:
Principal and leadership team coaching to align decisions, policies, and schedules with the school’s competency-based vision.
Teacher capacity-building through structured PLCs, training, and ongoing coaching.
Community partnership integration ensuring that museum resources and external collaborators were fully embedded in the school’s design.
What this made possible
From launch-year design to everyday practice, GRPMS built the systems—and confidence—needed to sustain a learner-centered, competency-based model.
The first graduating class posted scores on college-readiness above district and state averages across all academic areas.
Teachers gained new tools, protocols, and shared practices for competency-based, interdisciplinary instruction.
School leaders established systems and processes to sustain a learner-centered model beyond the launch year.
The protocols and coaching helped us translate our big vision into daily practice. Teachers felt supported to innovate, and the leadership team had a clear roadmap for sustaining the work.
